1. Evander Holyfield
Evander Holyfield has refused to retire at the age of 49. Although he was able to win his last fight in May 2011 against Brian Nielsen, I do not think he can continue at this level for a long period of time. He has limited the number of fights in the last several years. However, in Oct. 2011 he announced he wants to fight both Vitali and Wladimir Klitschko. The disturbing part is that he is convinced he can beat them and claim the title of heavyweight champion of the world. He may have to retire without this accolade for his records.
2. Roy Jones Jr.
At the age of 42, I have felt that Roy Jones Jr. should have retired several years ago, but he continues to stay in the sport. His last fight against Denis Lebedev in May 2011 ended with a KO that left Jones in a collapsed state on the canvas. However, he has been adamant about continuing. After the fight, he announced, “I still might come back.” He has scheduled a fight with Max Alexander for the UBO title in Georgia for Dec. 10, 2011. I hope that this is Roy Jones Jr. last appearance.
3. Shane Mosley
Although Shane Mosley is 40 years old, his best boxing days have passed. I continue to be surprised that he has refused to retire. His last fight with Manny Pacquiao in May 2011 was a disaster and dramatically showed his lack of speed compared to the opponent. Pacquiao easily kept his WBO welterweight belt while Sugar Shane Mosley seemed completely out of place.
Even Pacquiao’s trainer, Freddie Roach, felt it was time for his retirement, and rumors began that Mosley felt the same way. However, Shane Mosley has continued to assert his desire to keep boxing. In an interview in Oct. 2011, he mentioned that he will “definitely be back.” I doubt that Sugar Shane Mosley can avoid retirement for long.
