After Nonito Donaire Jr.’s disappointing bout against Omar Narvaez at the Madison Square Garden Theater — it wasn’t Donaire’s fault Narvaez was unwilling to engage — it’s best that he face current WBO World Super Bantamweight Champion Jorge Arce in his next fight.
Donaire was aggressive throughout the fight but it was Narvaez who did his best Joshua Clottey impersonation and refused to engage the young Filipino champion. Donaire did everything in his power to coax Narvaez into fighting him — he dropped his left hand and even allowed Narvaez to get a few right hands in. Still, the Argentine clamed up every time Donaire opened his defense up.
Bob Arum and Donaire are moving up to 122 pounds where an action-packed fight against Arce looms and a title fight against Japanese Toshiaki Nishioka also await.
While most of us would like to see Donaire fight Abner Mares and Joseph King Kong Agbeko before moving up, he admitted that he was felt cramps during his fight with Narvaez.
Juan Manuel Lopez and Yuriokis Gamboa also await Donaire if the FIlipino Flash decides to keep moving up, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves.
Let?s hope Arum pairs Donaire with opponents who come forward and fight just like what he did for Manny Pacquiao’s career. Against opponents who slug it out, Donaire’s talent truly shines.
Style makes fights and it was just a terrible idea to match Narvaez against Donaire.
