Donaire, Jr. retains his WBC/WBO bantamweight title but Narvaez exposed him

Moments ago, Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire, Jr., 27, of the Philippines retains his WBC/WBO Bantamweight titles against the challenger Omar “El Hurican” Narvaez, 36, of Argentina at the Madison Garden, WaMu Theater in New York City. The judges all scored the fight unanimously and respectively in favor of “The Filipino Flash” , 120-108: Julie Lederman, Tom Schreck and Steve Weisfeld. The third man in the ring Beiny Esteves, Jr.did very well to referee their twelve rounds of boxing.

Narvaez, a southpaw, may have just exposed the taller orthodox with his stance, though less punches were thrown the entire bout. Unlike Donaire, Jr. who has been hopping around in the confines of flyweight through bantamweight for more than a decade despite his high potential to move up banking on his height, size and reach advantage, it was the first time for Narvaez to fight at the bantamweight, even after his 11 years of trek in professional boxing. In tonight’s fight, Donaire, Jr. has shown inadequacy of arsenal to pin down the too short, too small, too old and too less powerful El Hurican. Donaire, Jr, for his part, has tried to utilize his reach potential, enough to score abover his opponent’s mounting defense. At this time, nothing flashly is shown against the undefeated. Narvaez, in turn, keeps his defenses tight, not really throwing enough punches. Advertisement

Donaire, Jr. might just stay longer in the bantamweight division, if one were to analyze the manifestation of his desires. Forget about his boisterous flair. It just stays there as talk, as least for next year. Either Yuriokis Gamboa or Juan Manuel Lopez will surely give a lot of troubles. Worse, they could knock him out. This, for sure, Top Rank Godfather Robert “Bob” Arum must rethink of his strategies for The Filipino Flash.

Should Donaire, Jr. continue to cherry-pick?

No one can divine.

Let us see what alibis he has along the road.
