Not really of Top Rank Godfather Robert “Bob” Arum’s choosing. What the boxing fans would see tonight is the stature of Omar Narvaez, 36, being too small, too old, too slow, too short for Nonito Donaire, Jr., 27. Narvaez has just turned a bantamweight fighter overnight after being convinced to fight Donaire, Jr. last July and offered a much higher reward than any of his fights on record of his more than a decade trek in professional boxing – a sacrificial lamb to boost Donaire, Jr.’s knockout wins, to advance the less trendy marketing game.
And the sycophants and the public relations writers get the better of the fight and continue to yield to the cowardness, trying to make Donaire, Jr.’s case an appealing one.
For hardcore boxing fans, they think Donaire, Jr. is just too scared to move up this soon to fight either Gamboa or Lopez. In fact, he’s forcing himself to settle down with the midgets and tried hard to show the public that he is lighter than Narvaez at the pre-fight weighing.
