IT was worst than that blow that knocked out Victor Ortiz on Sept. 18 at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
For having delivered that fight-ending punch, Floyd Mayweather Jr. has been thoroughly ostracized by the guardians of sportsmanlike conduct.
The vanishing breed of gentlemen around the world would not have thought twice lynching Mayweather had they been in the vicinity of the area, where Floyd The Foul unleashed the two worst shots in boxing.
To those still not in the know, Mayweather decked Ortiz to the canvas for good with a left-right blast when the defending world welterweight champion wasn?t looking.
For failing to beat the count of 10, Ortiz was declared loser by knockout in 2:59 of the fourth round, thereby handing to Mayweather his sixth world crown in five different divisions.
Afterwards, Mayweather defended his un-gentlemanly act by saying, ?You have to protect yourself at all times.?
Although it wasn?t exactly an issue of defending one?s self from possible destruction, as it was also an issue of when to and not to hit your foe, referee Joe Cortez absolved Mayweather of any wrongdoing.
?The fight was on after both boxers had touched gloves,? argued Cortez, who wasn?t looking when Mayweather punched the also-not-looking Ortiz in that fateful fourth.
With Cortez giving his stamp of approval on that free punch by Mayweather, boxing has been blasphemed once more.
The illegitimate shot became legitimate.
