DRIAN Francisco is back on track with his career after outclassing experienced Michael Domingo in their 10-round fight last Friday night at the Makati Coliseum in an all-Filipino battle.
The 28-year-old former World Boxing Association super flyweight king shattered Domingo?s dream of a possible world title crack in the future after a unanimous decision victory.
?Michael should have thrown more punches to convince the judges. It was a close fight but all the judges gave it to Drian,? ALA Promotions president Michael Aldeguer told Sun.Star Cebu yesterday.
The judges scored it 96-93, 96-93 and 95-94 all in favor of Francisco, who may break into the bantamweight rankings after beating an established veteran in the 118-pound category.
Aldeguer believes that his 32-year-old ward should ponder hanging up his gloves after a career that spans almost 12 years.
?Michael to me has reached the end of his career after more than 50 fights. It was a good run for him throughout his career after he came to us but never made it to the top. We will talk to him when he gets back as to what he wants to do,? he said.
However, Aldeguer thinks that if Domingo decides to continue fighting, then his chance of vying for a coveted world title is slim.
?It may or may not happen but with his record, not a lot of promoters would want their world champion to fight him as it could be a low-reward, high-risk type of fight.?
Francisco improved to 21-1-1 with 16 knockouts, while Domingo fell to 42-16-3 with 23 knockouts.
Meanwhile, unbeaten Roberto Gonzales survived a knockdown to escape with a close razor-thin split decision win over former world title challenger Balweg Bangoyan.
Gonzales (19-0, 10 KOs), who fell to the canvas in the sixth round, won in two out of the three judges? scorecards, 95-94 and 97-93, while the other judge gave it to Bangoyan (16-4, 7 KOs), 96-93.
Nino Magboo (15-2-1, 7 KOs), on the other hand, scored an eighth-round knockout over Rene Bestudio (10-2-4, 4 KOs).
