THE last time two Filipino greats fought atop the ring was in 1992 when former International Boxing Federation flyweight champions Rolando Bohol and polio-stricken two-division champion Dodie Boy Penalosa.
Back then, it was a much-talked event and enjoyed the attention befitting a world title bout as it was staged at the famed Araneta Coliseum.
Filipino fight fans came out in droves as it was a rare treat for them to witness two highly acclaimed fighters with unquestionable achievements.
Never mind the fact that when they fought, both Bohol and Penalosa were already way past their primes.
Before fighting Penalosa, Bohol won only two of his last eight bouts, including five straight losses between 1989 and 1991.
Penalosa, on the other hand, had a much better record and actually was unbeaten in his last six fights, where he won four and drew twice. However, most if not all those fights were against handpicked opponents.
