Amir Khan is confident he will get in the ring with Floyd Mayweather within the next nine months, but has ruled out the possibility of such a super-fight ever happening in Great Britain.
Khan is closing in on a deal to make the next defence of his WBA and IBF light-welterweight titles against American Lamont Peterson in December, but has his eyes on the bigger prize of Mayweather.
The American scored a controversial knockout win over Victor Ortiz in Las Vegas last weekend but is running out of credible opponents given his continued refusal to face pound-for-pound number one Manny Pacquiao.
Khan told the Guardian: ‘The fight will happen definitely – it’ll happen within the next six to nine months. I can see a lot of things in my armoury that would beat Floyd – he will take a lot of shots and he will get beat.’
While such an early date may appear wishful thinking on Khan’s part there is no doubt he has put himself firmly in the frame to face Mayweather after impressive wins over Marcos Maidana and Zab Judah.
But Khan admitted hopes of a Wembley showdown were even more unlikely.
