Floyd Mayweather Jr. was in rare form last night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas as he scored a knockout victory over Victor Ortiz. Now the WBC welterweight champion once again, Mayweather gave the estimated 14,687 spectators in the arena something they wouldn?t soon forget.
In the opening rounds, Ortiz wasn?t as aggressive as he should have been. Mayweather capitalized on this by landing a series of straight right hands that had the crowd on their feet during special occasions.
The fourth round is when it all went down. Halfway through the round, Ortiz landed some good shots and backed Floyd up to the ropes. From there, the young former champ showed his lack of experience by throwing a blatant headbutt out of frustration that landed on Mayweather?s mouth.
While Floyd was visibly agitated, referee Joe Cortez took a point away from Ortiz for the foul. Ortiz seemed sincere about his mistake and apologized to Floyd, but Mayweather wasn?t having any of it. The two men embraced in the center of the ring and Cortez would motion for them to ?fight?. Mayweather took advantage of this by clocking Ortiz with a quick left and a straight right that had a shocked Ortiz on the canvas until he was counted out.
After the fight it was a crowded scene at the post fight press conference as Ortiz wasted no time asking for a rematch ? I do want a rematch and I?m sure Floyd will give it to me.? Ortiz pointed out ?Floyd he?s a great fighter but I?m still not convinced he is the greatest.?
?If a rematch happens let?s do it.? stated an unfazed Mayweather. While a rematch is uncertain Floyd is eager and willing to face any and all comers for his next fight. ?Whoever you put in front of me they can?t beat me. ? He went on to say ?[Manny] Pacquiao is famous because he is connected to my name. When they mention Pacquiao they say who is that? They say that?s the guy we trying to get to fight Floyd Mayweather. When they say Floyd Mayweather they say that?s an all-time great!?
Mayweather hinted that a fight with Pacquiao could be possible but ?He needs to get his business in order first. ? Mayweather seems unimpressed with the upcoming trilogy matchup between Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez on November 12. ?All Pacquiao is doing is fighting my leftovers.?
