Speaking of backs, I am backing Floyd Mayweather Jr. for, like the wiley veteran that he is, not giving a young sucker like Not So Vicious Victor Ortiz a break in the ring in Las Vegas.
The cardinal rule of boxing is the referee’s time honored admonition, “Protect yourself at ALL times.”
They never say “protect yourself most of the time” or “protect yourself once in a while” or “protect yourself during the odd numbered rounds.” Advertisement
No, it is a rule that even Novice Division Golden Glovers know, “Protect yourself at ALL times.”
Yes, Nevada never should have put too old, too infirm Joe Cortez in as the referee.
Yes, Nevada should have assigned Number One guy Kenny Bayless to handle the Mayweather-Ortiz fight.
But they didn’t for no discernible reason.
Cortez did not make the biggest error. He made a smaller error compared to Ortiz’s terrible goof.
And Ortiz, who got $2.5 million for a weak four round effort, got cleanly clocked and KO’d by Mayweather when time was in session.
Don’t blame Cortez for that.
When they say “protect yourself at ALL times,” they mean what they say.
No one is going to have tell Manny Pacquiao that.
And why–and here’s the big question ongoing–isn’t “Money” banging the table, demanding the biggest money fight against Pacquiao?
