It has been well-chronicled that Victor Ortiz overcame a rough childhood that included being abandoned by his parents when he was a boy. But Ortiz doesn’t seem to be able to get past the heat he took after he folded his tent in the sixth round of a junior welterweight interim title-fight loss against Marcos Maidana in June 2009 at Staples Center.
Ortiz was criticized by reporters for quitting in what was a hard-hitting fight and now appears to want to lash out at them at every turn as if trying to gain a measure of revenge.
Ortiz, of course, attained that when he went won the welterweight title with a stirring victory over Andre Berto in April, and Saturday at MGM Grand in Las Vegas he will defend his belt against Floyd Mayweather Jr. in the biggest fight of his life (on HBO pay-per-view).
Apparently, that’s not enough.
During a recent conference call promoting Saturday’s fight, Ortiz was asked about the trouble he was having making the 140-pound junior welterweight limit before moving up to welterweight (147) to face Berto.
“I never had trouble making 140,” Ortiz said. “The media, for some reason, took it out of proportion, completely mixed it around in the media. And of course, they wrote what they thought if they were me and them in my shoes, would be like.
