President Pacquiao: Eye on Malacanang, Manny may quit ring after 2012 bouts

NEW YORK–The Manny Pacquiao Bandwagon is going to come to a crashing halt after 2012.

That is, if the Pinoy Idol and Congressmanny from Sarangani Province sticks to his ambitious agenda outside of the boxing ring.

Something’s changed, this time he’s the man with a post-boxing plan.

I’ve heard Pacman mention ring retirement in the past and always pooh poohed it. In my view, those exclamations were either said by a fighter exhausted by the physical and mental grind and/or a loving son just trying to pacify Mommy Dearest, meaning Dionesia.

But, after listening to Pacquyiao speak at length after his Chelsea Piers press conference on a drizzling Tuesday morning, I’ve been persuaded that we will the last of the phenomenal eight division world champion as a fighter in November of 2012.

“Not long,” Pacquiao said when asked how much longer he wanted to fight.

Then the 32 year old champion, who fights his Chapter III bout against Mexican counterpunching master Juan Manuel Marquez this Nov. 12, explained how he would occupy much of his time when he hangs up the gloves.

After beating the system in boxing, and leaving the sport with brains and bankbooks intact, Pacquiao will widen his political horizons, moving from the legislative to the executive branch in his beloved homeland.
