Mayol eyes KO victory

UNDEFEATED Rodel Mayol is not ruling out a knockout win when he seeks the World Boxing Council minimumweight title of Japanese Eagle Kyowa in their May 6 championship bout in Tokyo, Japan.

Mayol (22 wins, 17 KOs), who underwent a WBC-mandated medical test at a local hospital in Tokyo yesterday, told the Inquirer that somebody is definitely going to kiss the canvas when he attempts to become the only Filipino to hold a world crown.

For all his popularity, superstar Manny Pacquiao only holds a regional title, while the Hawaii-based Brian Viloria, who owns the WBC junior flyweight crown and is a 100 percent Filipino by blood, is an American citizen.

Mayol, the No. 1 Filipino contender in the 105-lb division, was accompanied to the medical testing yesterday by trainer Brix Flores, and a staff of Yasuo Matsuoka, Mayol’s manager.

Kyowa (15-1, 6 KOs) took the medical test earlier.

According to Mayol, he took a CT Scan test, X-ray, as well as urine and blood tests.
