Over the past few weeks IBF/WBA lightwelterweight champion Amir Khan and Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer have talked at length of Khan’s plan to take one more fight at 140lbs before moving up in weight in pursuit of an eventual bout with Floyd Mayweather.
And up until now, Mayweather seems to have been receptive to the idea.
Shortly before Khan’s unification bout with Zab Judah, Mayweather invited his English fans to his Las Vegas gym to watch him train, even releasing a press statement containing the following:
?I want to invite all my English fans in town to come to my gym this week and watch me work out for my upcoming fight with Victor Ortiz. I love my English fans.?
The English fans he mentions were of course in town to see Amir Khan, and with Khan and Schaefer mentioning a fight with Mayweather at every opportunity, inviting the English fans seemed to suggest that Floyd was interested.
Mayweather has also mentioned several times over the years his desire to fight in England at some point in the future, recently telling The Guardian’s Kevin Mitchell:
“I would love to come and fight at Wembley,” and also “You guys got some great venues. I could fill a soccer stadium over there.”
Oddly he didn’t mention that to fill a soccer stadium he would need to be paired against a British fighter. Khan is clearly the only fighter at the moment who fits the bill of being both a big draw in the U.K and sufficiently skilled to make the bout competitive, or at the very least appear so on paper.
