Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoya, speaking to fans through his twitter account earlier today, promised to give WBC champion Victor Ortiz his ‘formula’ to beating pound for pound great Floyd Mayweather, who it should be noted, De La Hoya lost to.
“Me and Castillo have been the closest in beating Mayweather. Believe me I have the formula which I’m going to pass on to Victor.”
De La Hoya’s formula seems mainly to be his oft repeated point about using a stiff jab against Mayweather, which was the strategy that helped him to perhaps come the closest to beating Floyd in their record breaking 2007 fight.
Surely then not something that should be that difficult to pass on, although this isn’t the first time De La Hoya has claimed to know an opponent would upset still unbeaten Mayweather or given one tips on how to do so.
He at one point picked Shane Mosley to upset Mayweather, although would later refer to the former three weight world champion as a ‘heavy bag’ before his loss to Manny Pacquiao.
He also picked Juan Manuel Marquez over Mayweather, saying in a blog post for The Ring:
“As long as you use your jab against Mayweather he’s lost. He doesn’t know how to block a jab. … Mayweather is not invincible. I truly feel Marquez will expose him.”
And before that, picked Ricky Hatton over Mayweather, saying during a press conference:
“I?ve been in there with Floyd. He doesn?t rely on power, he relies on speed. Hatton relies on both speed and power and that is the difference between him and any other fighter Floyd has fought.?
In each case the fighters in question were eventually dominated by Mayweather, and none including Ortiz have the same style or abilities as De La Hoya once did.
Even if De La Hoya hands Ortiz the perfect formula for an upset then, the question then becomes whether or not the young WBC champion can implement it.
The odds against Ortiz winning now stand at around 6 to 1, for reference Ricky Hatton, who was stopped in the tenth by Mayweather, was around a 3 to 1 underdog.
