Lamont Peterson comes through with late TKO over Cayo; Edison Miranda DQ?d

When I spoke to junior welterweight contender Lamont Peterson earlier this week, he hinted that he would have to give his career some serious rethinking if he were to lose his bout to Victor Cayo this weekend inside of the Cosmopolitan Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada. Fortunately for Peterson, he showed the professional and hunger that has defined his career by dominating his action with Cayo and scoring a late TKO.

Peterson-Cayo was an IBF eliminator, the title that Amir Khan now holds, and in the early rounds it was hard to decipher who was actually in front. Cayo?s awkward style seemed to give Peterson some issues but he remained calm and tried to figure the puzzle out.

From rounds four on Peterson was in control and began taking the fight over with a viscous body assault. Not the heaviest of punchers, Peterson?s early bombs did little to deter Cayo but slowly but surely the Dominican was being broken down.

In the tenth Peterson let everything out of the bag as he bludgeoned Cayo along the ropes. Towards the end of the stanza Peterson finally broke through with a wicked shot that had Cayo on the deck. Referee Kenny Bayless counted to ten as the bout was waived off.

With the victory Peterson improves to 29-1-1 with 15 knockouts and could be headed for a December showdown with Khan.

Despaigne pulls out disqualification victory over Edison Miranda In the evening?s co-feature bout, once-beaten Cuban Yordanis Despaigne went toe to toe with former title challenger Edison Miranda. The fight was fought at a brisk pace from the outset but it would prove to be the low blows from Miranda that would ultimately determine the contest?s final result.

Miranda was warned repeatedly in rounds one and two from referee Vic Drakulich to stop going low, but attacking the ribcage was obviously a huge part of his attack. Miranda appeared to catch Despaigne with a low blow right at the bell of round two and lost a point for his actions. Miranda again went low in round three and was deducted another point.

Miranda fought well after that point, showing initiative as he landed repeatedly with his right hand, but in the fifth he caught Despaigne with another shot below the border and the fight was waived off.

Miranda suffers his second loss in his last three fights and claimed afterwards that such injustices are what is wrong with the sport. ?Pantera? sees his record fall to 34-6 with 29 knockouts and has to go back to the drawing board.
