Ask the Champs Email Bag, April 3, 2006

Hosted by Jose Antonio Rivera and Charles “The Hatchet” Brewer – April 3, 2006

Jose,

I got two questions, i know this question was asked so many times but in your own opinion, who do you pick to win if Floyd and Sugar Ray Leonard was to fight at their prime? second will Pacman be a good lightweight fighter I know he start fighting at the minimum weight and move up to super featherweight yet, has the punching power to KO all of his opponents including the legendary MAB and EM.

SuperLolo

SuperLolo,

Yes, I have been asked this question before and my answer will remain the same. For now I am going to go with Sugar Ray Leonard until Mayweather starts beefing up his competition. The guys that Mayweather has beaten do not measure up to the likes of Benitez, Duran, Hearns and Hagler, all of which Leonard has beaten and these guys are all in the International Boxing Hall of Fame with the exception of Hearns who is still fighting. But you can bet, once Hearns does finally retire, he gets in the first time he is eligible. I think Mayweather has the potential to surpass Leonard and he is on the right track with his upcoming fight against Zab Judah. Then Floyd has to put together a hit list of fighter’s names like, Ricky Hatton, Miguel Cotto, De La Hoya, Winky Wright, Shane Mosley and I will even throw in there Vernon Forrest. These are the type of names Mayweather should concentrate on if he ever wants to be put in the Sugar Ray Leonard category.

As far as Pacman goes I have answered this question also and again my answer will remain the same. I think Pacman will be good at lightweight, but he will not be dominating like he has been thus far.

Jose,

Is Oscar Larios still the 122 pound champ? You said that if he loses to Pacquiao, he is still the champ at that division since the fight with Pacman is at 130.

Burnik

Burnik,

Good catch. My mistake Larios lost his WBC Super Bantamweight title late last year to Israel Vazquez. I honestly forgot about that. Larios must be moving up in weight now to challenge Pacman, but I do not know if he has any intentions in moving back down to try to re-capture his world title.

Jose,

Please give us your opinion of the upcoming Pacman Vs Larios Match is this going to be a good match? Is Team Pacman taking a big risk ? What about the $450,000 for larios ? Why not get Juan M Marquez for $ 100,000 wouldn”t more boxing fans wan’t to watch that match better than Larios.

Astig

Astig,

I think the Larios Vs Pacman fight is going to be exciting, but I also think the Juan Manuel Marquez fight would have been even more exciting. I do not think the Larios fight is as much of a risk as when he went up against Morales. Look for the Pacman vs. Marquez fight to be made sometime this year. All the fans including myself are looking forward to that one.

Jose,

Is there any news that Barrera and Pacquiao can collide this year? I heard that Pacquiao is very bust busy as a promoter now and is scheduled to fight again Larios. Morales is also scheduled to fight the Pacman this September. How will Pacman be trained in such busy scheds? I think no enough time to fight Barrera. What do you think?

Jun

Jun,

I have not heard of a Pacman vs. Barrera fight materializing for this year. I have heard talks that Barrera wants to fight Pacman and that Pacman wants to fight Barrera, but that’s all it is talk. Believe me when they sign on the dotted line to fight each other they are going to be busy training not promoting fights.

Hi Jose,

Do you watch ESPN on Friday nights? I would never miss it. You get to see fighters early in their career. You see mis-matches and good competitive fights as well. Even if the fights aren’t quite PPV level, they are entertaining. There are ALWAYS great in studio guests and Teddy Atlas is there to nail everything down. He’s amazing. I think ESPN is an important part of boxing, what do you think, Jose?

Judy

Judy,

Yes, every chance I get I like to watch ESPN2 Friday night fights and if I have to be in bed early because of my training I record the fights. Pretty soon there will also be Wednesday night fights so watch out for that. I agree any show that focuses on boxing is good for the sport. I wish more networks jumped on the boxing bandwagon. There are a lot of talented fighters out there that do not get many opportunities to showcase their skills.

Jose,

I am excited to see your fight with Garcia, its going to be an explosive entertainment experience! (pardon the cheesy alliteration)This may seem out-dated or out of topic…but I am a huge kostya tszyu fan and I haven’t heard any kind of news about him in a long time. Has he retired since his loss to hatton? I know his age started to show on that last bout of his, so Im curious to know if he’s still planning to fight… I would love to see the exquisite counter puncher in action one last time!

Jordan

Jordan,

Thank you, I am excited myself about the possibility of winning another world title. Kostya Tszyu has not officially retired. What he is doing is taking some time to see if he is going to retire or not. Right now he is doing the show dancing with the stars out their in Australia. Kostya is pretty much living the good life. I am a Kosta fan also, but honestly I hope he does retire. He has made a good living for himself and his family and I think he should be proud of that and enjoy them.

Hi Jose,

I’m pretty sure that Manny Pacquiao will beat Oscar Larios on their scheduled fight this coming July. And I’ve heard some news that if the third rematch between Pacquiao and Eric Morales does not materialized, then Manny Pacquiao will fight Marco Antonio Barrera. My question is, what will happen if Manny will beat Barrera the second time around? Who will he fight next? Will he move on to a heavier division (135lbs) and fight the elite fihters such as Jose Luis Castillo, Dieago Corrales,Juan Diaz, and Jesus Chavez? Or will Manny remain in the 130-pound division and wait for other fighters to challenge him?

Leonard

Leonard,

I am sure he will beat Larios also. As far as what materializes or not is hard to predict, but lets enjoy the Larios fight first and see what direction Manny wants his career to go in. I can guess, but I know that’s not what you want. I admit there are a lot of great possibilities out there for Manny, but we are going to have to wait and see. I would love to see Manny fight Barrera before he steps in the ring with anyone else, after the Larios fight of course. The reason being is because I want Manny to prove to the boxing critics that the first fight was no fluke.

Charles,

Everybody has different views on this, some say the there is a spot on or around the chin that if properly hit will knock out any opponent. Other’s say that some people have weak chins i.e. Wladmir Klitschko although i feel his problem was more to do with improper pacing thus causing his stamina problems and also the psychological damage done in the Sander’s fight. What is your opinion on chin’s are there ways to make it stronger? I also noticed that Lewis did not have the best chin but he compensated it by talking full advantage of his great skills under the guidance of Emanuel Steward and do you think that Steward is doing the same with Wlad Klitschko?

Dave

Dave,

That is a pretty interesting question. There is probably, no right or wrong answer to the chin issue. I’ve heard everything from doing neck rolls to strengthening your neck and to be able to take it better on the chin. To doing chin ups .Let’s be clear, the best way to make and keep your chin strong, is to not get hit on it. As far as one fighter being able to take it on the chin better than another fighter, there really isn’t a right or wrong answer. I’m sure there may be a medical definition for this, but most doctors have never thrown or gotten hit with a left hook and as far as gloving it up, yeah sure, they’d glove it up to keep their hands warm. Klitschko, he never impressed me as a fighter. Sure he has the height, but to me, it seems as though, he lacks true natural boxing ability. True, it may very well be a stamina issue with Wlad. And yes Steward is aware of the advantages that both Lewis and Wlad have with their height and reach so he trained them to utilize those assets to absolute best of their abilities.

Charles,

I always liked Donny Lalonde as super middleweight champion. Do you think you could have beaten? He nailed Sugar Ray and dropped him.

Josh

Josh,

I don’t know a whole lot about Lalonde. In fact, I believe I’ve only seen him fight once. He was a decent fighter, and he gave Ray a good fight, but in the end, SRL came out victorious and it was not because of his name. Lalonde, was out classed. Yes, I do believe I could have beaten Lalonde. It would have been a technical match, but I think my speed and power would have caused a problem for him.

Charles,

What do think would be Toney’s next move if Rahman does not give him a rematch?

Keliven Kenyon Galloway

Keliven,

It’s hard to say who he might actually fight next. Toney’s a true throw back and he’ll fight whoever the public would like to see him fight.

Charles,

If given the chance, who do you think would win between Manny Pacquiao and Prince Naseem Hamed?

Fourscythe

Fourscythe,

Interesting match up and styles actually make fights. But in this one, you have two individuals who have awkward styles yet; they both have knockout power. I’m actually stumped, on this one. I can however; say that it would be a very action packed fight. I would also say, whoever was first, to drop the bomb, could end up being the winner in this one.

Charles,

I for one thought that Toney would be Rahman but changed my mind when I saw him enter the ring at 237 lbs. Why would Toney come in at a career high in weight for the Heavy title and how much do you think it effected his performance. Thanks and stay well

Alan

Alan,

I also thought Toney would have been victorious in this match. As far as his weight, I think he put the weight on to be comparable to the weight of Rahman. Toney may be a heavyweight, but he doesn’t have a heavyweight punch. As far as his performance, I was really impressed with the pace that was maintained in the fight by the both of them. I do however, think that Rahman could have been more aggressive if he truly wanted to be successful and should have thrown more combinations upstairs and downstairs.

Hatchet Man,

How do you see these fights going?

Wilfredo Gomez vs Prince Naseem Hamed

Meldrick Taylor vs Felix Tito Trinidad at welter

Ray Mancini vs Diego Corrales

Dwight Muhammad Qawi vs Roy Jones jr at light heavyweight

Ramon Garci

Ramon,

Gomez Vs Hamed

Not sure in this one. Sorry to say, I know about Wilfredo Gomez, but never saw him actually fight. Naz could cause trouble for the best of them. That is, unless your name is Marco Antonio Barrera

Taylor Vs Trinidad at Welterweight

When Meldrick was Meldrick, meaning when he was in his hey-day, no competition. Meldrick would have danced circles around Trinidad taking a decision. Think Winky, and then even faster with Taylor.

Mancini Vs Corrales

Heart and will to win defines this one. I would have to give this one Corrales because he has the height and reach advantage over Boom Boom Mancini.

Muhammad Qawi Vs Jones, JR. at light heavyweight

Very good match up. I would have to give this one to Qawi by decision. He’s a true pressure fighter with a good defense. Roy is an offensive machine with superior hand speed, but as we have seen, Roy is not the best defensive fighter. A good offense is the best defense, but Roy would have to bring his A+ game in this one.
