Yesterday afternoon I caught up with outspoken trainer Roger Mayweather as he gave his thoughts on his nephews upcoming fight against Victor Ortiz. WBC Welterweight Champion Victor Ortiz gained recognition after a recent victory over Andre Berto, but Roger seems unimpressed with Ortiz as an opponent.
?I have only seen Victor Ortiz fight one time. I don’t see how dangerous he can be. I don?t know how dangerous he is or who he has beat. He beat Berto but who the **** is Berto? Berto ain’t nothing anyway.”
Mayweather-Ortiz is set to take place September 17 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Less than 2 months away Roger isn’t concerned by the lack of training time.
“Floyd starts training this afternoon, I know what I need to do to get him ready, he knows what he needs to do to get himself ready. I know what I’m doing. Nobody can beat my nephew nobody!”
Roger continued that Floyd doesn’t need to look at video of Ortiz in his previous fights.
“Floyd don’t look at tape. I look at the tape. I tell him how to attack.”
You have to wonder how much motivation Floyd Mayweather has at this point in his career. Enduring personal and legal issues along with a year long ring absence, its seems evident all of this could affect the undefeated Mayweather. Roger insist Floyd will not be distracted in training camp or in the ring when facing Ortiz.
“Floyd can block everything out when he is in camp. I never worry about him. He ain’t worried about nothing. When he is in this gym its all business.”
Roger was asked if he feels Floyd has the same hunger that he once had.
?If he ain’t then something is wrong. If you are in this sport of boxing you have to be hungry to accomplish a goal. I believe Floyd is still hungry and still wants to prove to the world that He’s the best fighter out there.”
One thing I can assure you is that after speaking to Roger, he is more confident than ever and ready to begin another intense training camp with his nephew.
