The Home Depot Center in Carson, California has been home memorable boxing moments, and on Saturday night lightweights Brandon Rios and Urbano Antillon look to keep the tradition alive.
In March, 2008 two other Mexican gladiators, Israel Lopez and Rafael Marquez did battle at Home Depot Center and their electric battle earned rights to Fight of the Year by The Bible of Boxing – THe Ring magazine.
Antillon and Rios are both known for their offensive styles of fighting, and the trash talking between the pair has put a personal twist on this already potentially explosive match-up.
“I get into the ring to fight and give a great show against any opponent,” said Rios. “But Antillon has been talking too much and it will be a pleasure to shut his mouth.” Advertisement
Last time Rios was in the ring, back in February, he placed Venezuelan Miguel Acosta on the canvas three times before stopping the fight in the tenth round.
As for Antillon, he electrified the Honda Center in Anaheim in a 2010 Fight of the Year candidate against Humberto Soto. Though he lost the bout in a decision, Antillon put himself in position for future fights – like this one against Rios.
“I know opportunities to fight for a world title are not easy to to come by,” said Antillon “I have to take advantage.”
Rios will defend his World Boxing Council lightweight title on Saturday, though the best lightweight in Juan Manuel Marquez.
There are still tickets available at The Home Depot box office, and the action will be carried via Showtime on American television.
