HOT POTATO – Top Rank Godfather Robert “Bob” Arum said Tuesday Manny Pacquiao must retire from boxing no later than 2013. “I would envision five more fights for Pacquiao and that includes his fight this November 12 against Juan Manuel Marquez,” Arum says.
Meanwhile, Arum says he has a high regard about what Pacquiao has been doing outside of the ring of madness.
Pacquiao, who will turn 33 on December 17, is the first eight-division world champion . He won ten world titles. He is the first to win the lineal championship in four different weight classes and was named “Fighter of the Decade” for the 2000s by the Boxing Writers Association of America (BWAA). He is also a three-time The Ring and BWAA “Fighter of the Year”, winning the award in 2006, 2008, and 2009.
Pacquiao, a Congressman representing the 15th Congress of the Philippines from Sarangani, is said to continue his bcommercial endorsements for foreign companies based in the US under the grace of Top Rank Promotions, even after boxing.
And, “I will continue to support his vision for a better Philippines; He is a great champion and I’m sure he will do great things for the Filipinos and the Philippines,” Arum adds.
Pacquiao’s professional career in boxing nows spans seventeen years. He launched his first professional debut on January 25, 1995 against Edmund Enting Ignacio in Mindoro, Philippines and stunned the boxing public of his first debut in the United States of America in 2001 by defeating International Boxing Ferederation Super Bantamweight titlist Lehlohonolo Ledwaba by way of technical knockout in round 6, which patched up Pacquiao’s two devastating defeats both via TKO in round 3 in the hands of Rustico Torrecampo in 1996 and Medgoen Singsurat in 1999.
In 2001, Pacquiao stunned the boxing public with his first debut in the United States of America by defeating International Boxing Ferederation Super Bantamweight titlist Lehlohonolo Ledwaba by way of technical knockout in round 6, which patched up his two devastating defeats, both via TKO in round 3 in the hands of Rustico Torrecampo in 1996 and Medgoen Singsurat in 1999.
Since, then, Pacquiao only lost to Erik Morales in 2005 via a unanimous decision and stalled two draws, first a techinical in the sixth round with Agapito Sanchez in late of 2001 and second a split with Juan Manuel Marquez in 2004, both of which lensed by the boxing public as controvertial decisions.
