Since announcing that he will face WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz in September, undefeated former five weight champion Floyd Mayweather has talked about one subject more than any other.
That subject isn’t his upcoming bout though, nor his opponent or even his plethora of upcoming legal cases.
The subject he has talked about constantly has instead been the possibility of him finally locking horns with Manny Pacquiao, a fighter he twice negotiated with but twice eventually failed to come to terms with.
Floyd has mentioned Pacquiao fighting his previous opponents, how he wants to fight him after he gets done with Ortiz. He has made more insinuations about Pacquiao’s use of performance enhancing drugs, and even at one point dragged Shane Mosley’s name into the debate, and was quoted by the AsianJournal as saying:
?I spoke to Sugar Shane Mosley and he told me, he regrets not asking Pacquiao to take a drug test. He said, ?if I were you, I?d make him take the test.?”
He also brought up the Filipino in an interview with Boxingscene earlier this week: ?After this fight, if I?m able to negotiate a Pacquiao fight, it could happen. Ortiz is a southpaw. That could lead to the Pacquiao fight. If it does or it doesn?t, I?m not going to stop fighting.?
Even as far back at his press conference on stage with Ortiz, Floyd said:
“This is for the fans. This is for the Pacquiao fans too. Do I want the Pacquiao fight? Absolutely, if that is what the fans want. I want to give the fans what they want, but I have to take it one step at a time.”
Mayweather has been widely criticized in the past for being rather non-committal on who he will fight next and when.
In the past when when asked about Pacquiao he would decline comment, if one alleged victim is to be believed have his bodyguards attack at the mere mention of his rival, or claim to be focusing on his upcoming opponent/time with his family/other projects.
