Mike Jones talks Mayweather-Ortiz, facing Saul Alvarez, Cotto-Margarito II, more

In the first part of my interview with welterweight contender Mike Jones, we went over his early years in the sport, his impressions of the Philadelphia gym scene, and the learning lessons he took away from his recent scraps with rugged Sinaloa, Mexico native Jesus Soto Karass. Jones is also being considered as an opponent in the near future for WBO welterweight champion and revealed that although he would prefer some more experience before a fight of such magnitude, he would be ready if called upon for that challenge.

As our conversation rolled on, I was curious as to what Jones thought of some of the talent near or in his weight class and began throwing questions his way. Such matchups we discussed were the September 17th Floyd Mayweather-Victor Ortiz fight at the MGM Grand as well as the December rematch between Miguel Cotto and Antonio Margarito.

Jones gave his take on the ?cherry-picker? tag often attached to Mayweather, whether or not he feels Andre Berto can come back after his loss to Ortiz, why he feels that Cotto is far from finished, and what makes Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez special as a fighter.

In his own words, read below for the second part of my interview with Jones?

Floyd Mayweather vs. Victor Ortiz? ?I think that it?s a good fight for boxing. I think boxing needs fights like that. Fighters facing the champions. A popular fighter like Floyd Mayweather, the pound-for-pound best in the world, fighting a young, hungry fighter, I think it will put both of them to the test. I think it will bring the best out of both of them. As a fight fan I would be interested in seeing that fight. The world will be interested in watching that fight also.?

Mayweather picking and choosing whoever he wants? ?In the position he is in, he is in a very powerful position in his career. He can pick and choose whoever he wants. I?m not knocking him for that. It?s a hard struggle to get on top, so I?m not knocking him. At this point in his career, right now, where he?s already set and comfortable for his future and stuff like that, I think it?s time for him to fight the best. The ones that are out there, like Manny Pacquiao. I think it?s time to face a proven, great fighter and a Hall-of-Famer. I think he should face the best fighters that the fans want him to face.?
