When Julio Cesar Chavez Junior won the World Boxing Council’s middleweight title, most of the boxing world accepted that he was just a name with his belt.
Junior’s crowning decision victory over Sebastian Zbik, was razor thin and did nothing to make one consider Chavez Junior was the best middleweight in the world – that distinction belongs to Sergio Martinez.

Regardles, following Junior’s win there was hub-ub about the young Mexican battling Martinez, or Puerto Rican veteran Miguel Cotto before the end of the year. Advertisement
Not so fast.
Apparently Chavez Junior has set his trajectory to much lower heights: proposed fights with Peter Manfredo and Marco Antonio Rubio.
“I have a non-mandatory fight and Peter Mandredo’s name is being discussed for a title defense,” said Chavez Junior. A bout against Manfredo could take place September 24 in Mexico.
After Manfredo, Chavez Junior stated he would like to defend against mandatory opponent Marco Antonio Rubio.
While Rubio and Manfredo are marginal world class fighters, at best, and will do nothing to lift the stock or status of Chavez Junior.
If nothing else, Chavez Junior, and his promoters Fernando Beltran and Bob Arum, are doing everything possible to keep the victories rolling.
The illusion of greatness can get you very far in boxing.
