There is a fair argument that can be made that Floyd Mayweather Jr has cherry picked some of his past opponents. When he steps into the ring against the younger primed and ready Victor Ortiz, he will be facing a very worthy opponent. If the Pacquiao Vs. Mayweather fight can’t happen, then Floyd may as well fight the other champ.
Floyd could have picked a lot of other guys, but this time he took the current world champion instead. Ortiz erased doubts about his heart when he recently throttled then world champion Andre Berto. There was certainly no quit in the kid this time, that’s for sure.
I’m beginning to believe that Ortiz just had a really bad outting Vs. Maidana and just stepped into a buzz saw that night. What he did Vs. Berto was a work of art. This kid can fight, and if the same Ortiz shows up Vs. Mayweather as what showed up Vs. Berto, we have a scrap on our hands here.
Will Ortiz defeat Floyd? I’m guessing not. However, if the same Ortiz shows up that pounded Andre Berto, Floyd will have his hands full for awhile. Advertisement
Floyd has taken a beating by many scribes, including by me about some of his previously picked opponents. This go around nobody can say that Floyd took an easy fight. Obviously we all would rather see Floyd and Manny go at it, but no such luck.
Even if Floyd does beat up Ortiz, at least he didn’t take an older smaller guy. Perhaps this is a prelude to a Pacquiao Vs. Mayweather fight. Or perhaps I am once again just wishful thinking.
Mississippians that I have spoken to about this fight are pretty much in agreement. I spoke with Sal Ross, a local fire fighter who is a Mayweather fan and got his thoughts on the fight, ” Floyd will win this fight easy, but at least he picked a young strong primed fighter.”
James Crowder of Canton, MS said, ” Ortiz is no Pacquiao, but he will do for now. I hope Ortiz can pull it off. He looked very good Vs. Berto.”
Love him or hate him, Floyd didn’t cherry pick for this next fight. Ortiz can bring some danger to the ring, especially if he fights like he did Vs. Berto.
