The wait is over, the time has come, Floyd Mayweather Jr. will return to the ring on September 17, 2011 against WBC welterweight champion, Victor Ortiz. As of right now the location site is yet to be decided upon, but chances are that it will end up in Las Vegas. Mayweather last fight was 13 months ago when he dominated Shane Mosley at the MGM Grand.
Many fans will try to say that Floyd cherry picked a young fighter that is still wet behind the ears, I for one would not agree with that. I view Ortiz/Mayweather as a very good look for Floyd. Aside from Pacquiao, the two fighters that I wanted Floyd to face are Sergio Martinez and Victor Ortiz.
Floyd picking Ortiz may also be a step closer to the winner possibly facing Pacquiao next year in May. I mean after all, it seems to me that Floyd picked Ortiz to get a good look at a strong, fast, southpaw. I mean no disrespect in saying this, but Victor Ortiz is much better for practice than facing a Paul Spadafora.
Truth be told, I was never into seeing a Mayweather/Spadafora match anyway. In Ortiz/Mayweather, we will at least be seeing Mayweather in against a young lion who against all odds will be pushing himself to show the boxing world that he is for real.
So can Ortiz be the first fighter to hang a loss on Pretty Boy?s ledger? I by the way am calling Floyd Pretty Boy for this build up because his Ortiz pick as an opponent takes me back to his Pretty Boy days when Floyd would take on fighters with risk. Like the time when Floyd took on Genaro Hernandez, I believe that Floyd was 16-0 or 17-0 at the time. It wasn?t until about 2002 when Jose Luis Castillo gave Floyd hell that Floyd then turned into a low risk, high reward type of ?Prizefighter?.
As I pen this piece, I just now recieved word that Genaro Hernandez has just passed away. Hernandez was a two-time junior lightweight champion who was a real technical fighter. Hernandez lost the battle to a rare form of cancer. Hernandez was only 45 years young. 38-2-1 was Hernandez?s boxing record and his last fight he ever lost in the ring was against Pretty Boy Floyd Mayweather Jr. It saddens me that we lost a great person today. Rest in peace Chicanito. I?m almost certain that Floyd will dedicate his fight against Ortiz to the loving memory of Genaro Hernandez, after all, it was Hernandez that gave Floyd his first title shot. We will all miss you Chicanito.
