$65 Million Purported Offer to Pacquiao – Confirmed as False

Media outlets continue to spew rumors of coming wars and all “birth pangs” saying “Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim offered Manny Pacquiao $65 million to fight Saul “Canelo” Alvarez in Mexico”. After all the punches and counter-punches of some writers, now Michael Rosenthal of Ringtv.com knocks out Gil C. Cabacungan of Philippine Daily Inquirer who apparently was the first to report the purported offer.

Marked by brevity, Rosenthal said Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer who promotes Saul “Canelo” Alvarez confirms that such offer is false.

According to Rosenthal, Schaefer said “I have a nice relationship with the Slim people and I talked directly to Mr. Slim. It’s not true,” refering to the same report.

The source of the information was Illocos Sur Gov. Luis “Chavit” Singson, a longtime Pacquiao confidante, according to Cabacungan.

Meanwhile, Alvarez , undefeated of 36 fights with one draw and boasting 70.27% wins by way of knockout, is scheduled to face off Ryan Rhodes, 34, (45-4-2) of United Kingdom on June 18, 2011 in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. Rhodes has 63.27% wins by way of knockout. It’s going to be the first title defense for his World Boxing Council (WBC) light middleweight belt which he won over Matthew Hatton after the same sanctioning authority declared it vacant for a match early this year. And Pacquiao, 32, is scheduled to fight Juan Manuel Marquez, 38, the third time. Pacquiao will defend his World Boxing Organization Welterweight title at the MGM Grand Arena on November 12 this year.
