Are Boxing Writers a bit premature in anointing Manny Pacquiao as the coming P4P Superstar of the game?
We seem to have short memories, wasn’t it just last year that Ricardo Mayorga was the talk of the town based on the conquering of Vernon Forrest twice;and in my opinion a loser on points in their second encounter; and you know what happened with Spinks! Prior to that Shane Mosley was getting all the ink until he fell to Vernon Forrest a couple of times.
So Manny has one fight against a name fighter Marco Antonio Barrera and he is raised from fistic obscurity to Superstardom! Not to say that he isn’t a good fighter and a potential Numero Uno but least let’s see several more fights against quality opposition. Recent events and overall boxing history dictates that one fight does not make a career.
Scrutinizing carefully his 41 fight career approximately 28 of Mannys fights have been in the weight range of 106lbs to 116 lbs; if you have actually have had any practicle experience boxing in those divisions you know that the level of competition can be suspect and a one pound advantage is believe it or not devastating!
