Antonio Margarito received a horrible beating from Manny Pacquiao last November en route to losing a wide decision.
Flollowing the defeat, Margarito was hospitalized due to a cracked right orbital bone and the Texas Department of Liscensing and Regulation, which sanctioned the Dallas bout, levied a 120 day suspension on the Mexican-American fighter.
The suspenson was set to be lifted on March 13 of this year, but Margarito must first be cleared by an optomologist.
Last week, with Margarito planning to fight Puerto Rican Miguel Cotto in a rematch of their July, 2008 classic later this year, it was reported that the “Tijuana Torando” was contemplating retirement due to a detached retina. Advertisement
Margarito denied these reports and provided an update on his medical condition.
“My retina is attached,” said Margarito. “I can assure you of that. My doctor has just required me to rest for the remainder of 2011. I am not retiring and hope to return in 2012.”
With Margarito having been in tough fights with Cotto, Pacquiao, and Shane Mosley in recent years, one has to wonder if the junior middleweight should keep fighting – for his own safety.
