Erislandy Lara takes a giant leap in competition

Cuban junior middleweight Erislandy Lara (15-0-1, 10 KOs) is coming off of the first set-back of his professional career, but that has not kept the confident Cuban from agreeing to take the biggest fight of his professional boxing life.

In March, the highly regarded prospect fought Carlos Molina to a majority draw on ESPN’s Friday Night Fight series. Going into the event, Lara was expected to use Molina as a stepping stone en route to bigger and better fights.

Though Lara struggled to even secure a draw against Molina, the Golden Boy Promotions represented fighter has landed a July 9 fight against American Paul Williams (39-2, 27 KOs) to be televised on HBO. Advertisement

Williams presents Lara stiffest competition to date, sporting a knock-out percentage of 62 percent and standing six feet and one inch – four inches taller than the Cuban.

Most importantly, if Lara stalled against Molina, the probability of him defeating Williams are very slim.

Though Williams was last seen getting knocked out by Sergio Mora in violent fashion, the South Carolinian was once considered one of the best fighters in the world.

Though no site has officially been announced, Lara vs. Williams could land in Atlantic City, a city which has hosted two of Williams’ previous marquee fights.
