RP’s Gabi challenges Aussie’s 2 titles today

In what he calls the most important fight of his life, Diosdado Gabi eyes to become the first world boxing champion from Davao as he faces undefeated Australian world flyweight champion Vic Darchinyan today in California, USA.

Darchinyan, who has won all his 24 fights, stakes his International Boxing Federation and International Boxing Organization titles today against the Filipino challenger.

“This fight will be the most important night of my life,” said Gabi in a press briefing yesterday. “I want to win to make my country proud. I send money home regularly, so winning will help my wife and family back in the Philippines.”

Cornerman

Gabi, a fisherman’s son from Barangay Lansang, Davao City, is handled by famed trainer Freddie Roach, who also serves as cornerman of Filipino boxing hero Manny Pacquiao and ALA Boy prot?g? Rey Bautista.

“I am going in there to take his title,” said Gabi.

Darchinyan, a known strong puncher who has knocked out 19 of his opponents, was even more confident, promising to put an early end to the bout.

“Nobody can beat me. Nobody can run away from me for 12 rounds. I am fit. I am strong,” said Darchinyan. “I promise to finish the fight early. Tell me when you want it to end, and I will do it.”

The 26-year-old Gabi, who like Bautista is managed by American Mike Koncz, said he is prepared to counter Darchinyan’s punches.

“I have a dangerous uppercut and plan to use it. I will use the angle to create new openings. I am a good counter puncher and strong defensive fighter,” said Gabi. “This will be a classic boxer against puncher match-up.” (JCT)
