LAS VEGAS?Ronald Reagan said it best, I think, when he exhorted Soviet Union leader Mikhail Gorbachev to tear down the hideous Berlin Wall, the symbol of the dreaded Iron Curtain and the divide between East and West.
?Tear down that wall, Mr. Gorbachev!?
That’s what the American leader said and that is what transpired, the wall marking the division of Germany into the Free World and the Communist bloc portion was destroyed.
I now implore Manny Pacquiao promoter Bob Arum to tear down the wall at his Top Rank promotional outfit, to let the wall come tumbling down like the Biblical walls of Jericho.
After the dreary wide points victory over Mosley, Arum went into his own defensive mode, saying:
“Nobody is going to beat Pacquiao. Other fighters are hopeless against him.
“He takes everyone out of their game plan. Nobody can perform against him,” Arum said.
That’s what Gorbachev and his cronies used to call propaganda, folks.
No more safety first Pacman foes such as Joshua Clottey.
No more undeserving challengers such as Antonio Margarito.
No more ?punched tickets? like dismal Sugar Shane Mosley, who promised to bring heavy artillery and showed up at the MGM Grand Saturday night with all the power of a broken cap pistol.
Look, I’m not saying that Arum and his cash cow, Pacman, have been ducking anyone because that is not true.
But we’ve been getting out house efforts from Arum’s carefully selected in house foes.
Considering the $55 PPV TV charges, the consumers are ready to revolt.
Arum needs to announce Open Season for young, willing and aggressive Pacquiao opponents for 2012.
No problem with Mexican counterpuncher Juan Manuel Marquez getting his third Pacman chance on Nov. 5 or Nov. 12. Their shared history and their respective styles will make for a scrap a helluva lot better than the Mosley Minuet we just endured.
