That’s not a news flash. It’s a reminder. This is also not a last-ditch attempt to call the fight for
boycott.
The fight is here, and no amount of criticism can stop that. It’s an event. A big one. Always is now with Manny Pacquiao. He’s the world’s best and most exciting fighter. When he fights, you watch.
But lest we forget, Shane Mosley didn’t deserve this fight. It was an abomination from the start .
And even though since then, there have been certain developments that may have justified Pacquiao selecting Mosley as his opponent, thereby changing the opinion of many, it doesn’t matter. The fact remains that Mosley has no business being in the fight. My opinion hasn’t.
For the record, outside of Floyd Mayweather Jr. and after Antonio Margarito, there was only one fighter I wanted Pacquiao to fight who was not only deserving, but available and marketable too, and it was Juan Manuel Marquez.
Promotional hullabaloo prevented that from happening, which is why Mosley gets credit for abandoning Golden Boy Promotions to pursue a fight with the sport’s mega money-maker. But Pacquiao gets some blame by letting Top Rank and Bob Arum just go with the fight and not try hard enough to land a fight with Marquez without so much as whipping his hand.
Mosley simply didn’t deserve it. How many times and ways can I say it? He had a draw and a loss in two disappointing performances for his last two fights, 2-2-1 in his last five. Not exactly the credentials that should get you a meeting in the ring with the world’s No. 1 pound-for-pound boxer.
When Pacquiao fought Margarito, there was an outcry. Many fans despised and denounced it. In a nutshell, Margarito also didn’t deserve it. But it sold. There were some angles on the match-up to work with. When the fight was made and you either just watched it or you didn’t, fans just decided that they wanted to get Margarito in the ring with the Filipino fighter and get a beating of a lifetime for the wrongs he did in the sport.
