TOP Mexican cutman Joe Chavez will be in Diosdado “Prince” Gabi’s corner when the Filipino fighter challenges world titlist Vic Darchiyan for the International Boxing Federation (IBF) flyweight title on March 3 at the Chumash Casino Resort in Santa Ynez, California.
Mike Koncz, Gabi’s manager, relayed this information to Sun.Star Davao in an overseas call from his home in Orange County, California Thursday.
Koncz said Gabi is prone to cuts and that there’s no best substitute than hiring the best man out there in the business.
Chavez had worked for Manny Pacquiao in his last two fights, including his 10th round demolition of Erik Morales in January.
Chavez had also worked with world champions Vernon Forrest and James Toney.
Gabi’s corner include trainer Freddie Roach, Eric Brown and Koncz himself.
The 26-year-old Gabi, who hails from Barangay Lasang, Davao City, will be making his first world title fight and is clearly listed as the underdog in the scheduled 12-round championship fight.
Darchinyan, born in Armenia but is now fighting for Australia, holds a record of 24-0 with 19 KOs, while Gabi has 26-2-1 with 18 KOs.
Meanwhile, Darchinyan, his trainer Jeff Fenech, Gabi and Roach will host an international media conference call this Tuesday to discuss their world title fight.
