What recession? Thursday night at Club Nokia; boxing fans packed the trendy Los Angles nightclub like a pack of sardines, standing room only. Aside from witnessing sizzling action from young Golden Boy promoted prospects, crowd got to meet newly crowned WBC welterweight champion, Victor Ortiz, who later joined analyst Doug Fisher on a telecast.
In the main event of the evening of a professional boxing card dubbed Fight Night Club, that was televised by Fox Sports Net, a light welterweight from East Los Angeles, Frankie Gomez (9-0,7KO’S) took only twenty five seconds to destroy overmatched opponent from Vancouver, Washington, Jason Davis(11-9-1,3KO’S). An overhand right to the temple dropped Davis for the count. The crowd responded with cheers to a spectacular knock out.
East LA?s junior light weight prospect, Ramon Valadez (8-1,4KO’S) thrilled packed house at Club Nokia on Thursday night by outfighting Rafael Lora (11-5, 5KO’S) from Dominican Republic over six hard fought, exciting rounds. All there judges scored the fight in favor of Valadez: 60-54 twice and 59-55.
In the opening bout Fidel Maldonado Jr (10-0,9KO’S) from Albuquerque, New Mexico scored a first round knock out over light welterweight from Puerto Rico, Jorge Cordero (4-7, 4 KO’S). Left hook ended the night for Cordero at 1:03 mark of the very first frame. Advertisement
Unbeaten welterweight from Los Angeles, Ernesto Ocon (3-0,2KO’S) continued his winning ways scoring an impressive third round stoppage over tough Puerto Rican, Miguel Pizarro(1-2). What was impressive is that after Ocon landed a straight left that hurt his opponent upstairs, he continued his barrage going to the body exclusively until Pizarro went down on the canvass. Referee Jack Reiss reached a count of ten at 58 second mark of the third stanza.
In the final bout of the evening, junior middleweight from Oxnard, California , Alfonso Blanco( 5-0,2KO’S) battered Juan Carlos Diaz from Santa Ana around the ring for four exciting rounds ,but couldn’t finish the fight early. All three judges scored the fight the same 40-34 for Blanco.
After scoring an off balance right hand knockdown early in the first round Blanco ignited the crowd unloading a hail of punches on Mexican veteran against the ropes. Blanco, who is being trained in Oxnard by Robert Grandpa Garcia, continued to land crisp, accurate punches in the second. Another flurry deposited Diaz on the canvass again. He beat the count and continued to absorb punishment until the final bell.
