Former pound for pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr’s faced the first of two scheduled court appearances this week on Monday, and as a result now looks less likely to return to the ring this year.
The case yesterday was a misdemeanor battery charge involving the homeowners association security guard he allegedly poked in the face after a verbal altercation related to parking tickets, and was delayed until September.
The poking carries a maximum sentence of six months in jail and a fine, although it is unlikely Mayweather will be looking at any time inside.
Right now the security guard’s complaint is the least of Mayweather’s problems however.
The remaining case which Mayweather will be in court for on Thursday at the Clark County District Court is a more serious one, the alleged felony assault of his former girlfriend and threatening his children, also including charges of grand larceny, coercion and robbery.
That case has already been postponed twice and carries with it a potential maximum sentence of 34 years in prison, although of course the maximum sentence is very unlikely.
It had been rumored by numerous writers recently that various members of team Mayweather have been confirming that Floyd is gearing up for a return bout. Without an opponent as of yet and with more court appearances before the end of the year however, that is now looking less likely.
Golden Boy’s Richard Schaefer recently spoke to ESPN and said that Mayweather could take on newly crowned WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz.in the near future.

Ortiz is naturally interested in the bout given that he would undoubtedly make a career high purse and could potentially elevate himself into a genuine pay per view attraction at the same time. For the time being it isn’t clear what Mayweather himself makes of the bout.
A more likely first bout for champion Ortiz might be a rematch with former champion Andre Berto, who he beat to a unanimous decision earlier this month to get his hands on the belt.
What is clear at the moment is that Mayweather could probably do with an opponent as soon as he can get one, due to the fact that in addition to his legal trouble, he is also currently facing bills for millions in unpaid taxes from the IRS.

While he still has legal cases hanging over him however, preparing for a bout and all the media interest that goes with it would likely prove difficult. Not least of which because sooner or later he could be sentenced to jail time.
