Vicious Ortiz took Berto?s heart- I tell you, in this milk the cow for all that it?s worth way of thinking that many seem to have these days, boy I tell you it can really turn around and take a bite right out of you. This has been and was the case last night for Andre Berto. In the opinions of many fans out there, it is said that fighters such as Berto were given snack after snack to feast on, but we all now see why it is more important to give your fighter main courses from time to time as well. That?s what made Ali the greatest, this is what makes Pacquiao the monster we see today, because they are constantly given main courses so they step up and always perform to their highest level because they realize that a threat stands in front of them. Berto was given way too many snacks so when a main course was thrown his way, Berto couldn?t finish the plate. Ortiz to the naked eye may have looked to be stronger and at times faster than Berto in there.The real answer as to why Ortiz was able to do the type of things that he was able to do to Berto was simply because coming into the fight Ortiz was more battle tested and better mentally prepared for a fight of this magnitude. So for all you business minded types out there, sure it may seem smart to fight cab drivers for a million dollars, I mean it?s good for your bank account, but all those zero?s in your bank account can not come out and fight for you when a lion is in your way. Just some food for thought.
Ortiz who improved to 29-2-2 was able to beat the fight right out of Berto, thus handing Berto the first loss of his career. Berto, 27-1, will now have to bounce back and prove to not only us but to himself that he is not an underachiever. Berto must push himself to the limit and then push even harder, because that is exactly what Ortiz did last night and because of that, Ortiz now finds himself being the NEW WBC Champion at 147 pounds. Ortiz was able to shine like a diamond because not only did Ortiz kill physically but on the mental side is where Ortiz was able to really show his true colors. Berto was in it physically but not mentally, Berto was rattled mentally because he now suddenly had a live guy in front of him who was going to punch him back and not just stand there and become his own personal punching bag. In watching the fight, I noticed that in the beginning of the 7th round as both fighters were getting ready to approach one another, Berto looked across the ring at Ortiz and said ?war?. That to me told me all that I needed to know, that told me that in a ?war? was the last thing that Berto expected to be in. Berto thought that Ortiz was the quitter that he saw and read about, that Ortiz who just moved up to a new division to face Berto would not be strong enough to bang with the bigger boys, Berto expected for Ortiz to fold and hand him his heart just like the other snacks previously did. So you see, a ?war? was the last thing on Berto?s mind coming into the fight. It?s been a long rocky road for Victor Ortiz, but as Ortiz told me a few weeks ago, it?s his time and he just is not going to go there to win the belt, Ortiz was going there to conquer Berto for the belt, and that is exactly what Ortiz did.
King Khan defeats McCloskey by technical decision- Khan improved to 25-1 as he cruised through to a technical decision victory over the slippery McCloskey. The bout was stopped in the 6th round when McCloskey suffered a cut over his left eye, the cut was caused by a headbutt as both fighters came in to land their shots. Since the bout was stopped, the fight was forced to go to the cards where all 3 judges had Khan up on their score cards. McCloskey who now falls to 22-1, seemed to me like he was out there trying to simply frustrate Khan with movement. Khan however was still able to find his target more often than not. Khan may now have a future date with Timothy Bradley in the summer for 140 pound supremacy.
Salido stops JuanMa!- JuanMa Lopez was stopped for the first time in his career in also getting his first loss in front of a very loud home crowd in Puerto Rico. The man that gave him his first blemish was Orlando Salido of Mexico. The referee stopped the bout in the eighth round as both fighters were exchanging shots. To me, in my opinion the bout was stopped in pre mature fashion. The bout was very exciting and to me it is very much worthy of a rematch. JuanMa drops to 30-1, as Salido improves to 35-11-2. This is exactly why Gamboa/Lopez should have already gone down, a loss on Lopez?s ledger now takes some sizzle off of that future clash.
