Few are giving ring legend Erik ‘El Terrible’ Morales much of a chance of upsetting WBA light welterweight interim champion Marcos Maidana this weekend, and more than a couple have even voiced their concerns over Morales’ health
Health concerns aside, refreshingly Morales is at least going for an all or nothing finish to his career.
Far too many fighters who hang around too long after they should have retired, whether because they need the money or in many cases simply don’t know what else to do and miss the lifestyle, do so at a low level.
This inevitably damages their legacy more in the long run because when they finally do lose it is against lower level competition.
Morales is putting his money where his mouth is.
Maidana is possibly the most dangerous fighter in the light welterweight division today. And dangerous not in the sense that he can’t be beaten, but that even when he loses his opponents take a severe beating.
For Morales, a loss to Maidana would carry with it no shame, but should be all the impetus he needs to make him see he just can’t perform to the same standards as he was once able to.
Of course there is the remote chance, and remote is probably being generous, that Morales beats Maidana.
