Now that Juan Manuel Marquez and Golden Boy Promotions have kissed and made up, the probability of the Mexican boxing standout fighting Manny Pacquiao are slime and none.
A long standing fued between Golden Boy and Pacquiao’s promotional representation Top Rank is running hot as ever, blocking many sizzling match-ups from taking place within the ring.
So what does the future hold for Marquez, who reportedly has at most four fights left in his Hall of Fame career?
A Univision report points to potential bouts with Zab Judah, the winner of Robert Guerrero vs. Michael Katsidis on Saturday night, or rising British star Amir Khan.
Though Marquez would be a clear underdog against a Manny Pacquiao who has become stronger and more technically sound than in their first two fights, watch Juan Manuel thread the needle one more time would be high drama – for as long as it lasted.
Tangles with Guerrero or Katsidids, would likely prove to be child’s play for the master counter-puncher (Marquez already owning a victory over Katsidis), and confrontations against junior welterweight Judah or Khan could be intriquing, but makes one wonder if Marquez can carry the necessary weight to be competative.
Marquez has Pacquiao’s number, though he has never officially beat the Filipino, and that makes for good pay per view sales, and ticket sales, his new alternative do neither.
Interestingly enough, with Erik Morales and Marcos Maidana fighting within the junior welterweight limits on a Golden Boy promoted event Saturday night, neither man has been mentioned a possible foe for Marquez.
