Sources close to the information have informed us that future Hall of Famer Roy Jones Jr. is planning a return to the ring this May. An opponent and venue have yet to be named, but the bout will take place at cruiserweight. Jones last fought nearly a year ago when he lost a unanimous decision to rival Bernard Hopkins. Since then, he has resumed his duties as a commentator for HBO World Championship Boxing.
Although Jones has been a champion in multiple divisions, including middleweight, super middleweight, light heavyweight, as well as heavyweight, he’s never held a title at cruiserweight. The one time he did attempt to fight in the relatively lackluster division, back in December of 2009, he was surprisingly stopped in the first round by IBO cruiserweight champion Danny Green.
Looking to rebound from his loss to Hopkins in April of 2010, Jones was originally scheduled to return to the ring in October against cruiserweight Danny Santiago, but a hand injury suffered during training camp forced him to pull out of the bout. Perhaps that fight will take place after all.
