This is what boxing promoter Lou DiBella had to say to 8CountNews at the Sergio Martinez Vs. Sergiy Dzinziruk press conference. 8CN’s Peter Czymbor posed the question to Lou DiBella, “Would you consider putting Sergio Martinez against Manny Pacquiao at a catch-weight of 150lbs?”
In a previous interview with 8CN, boxing trainer Freddie Roach said that he would put Manny Pacquiao up against Sergio Martinez at 150lbs. When DiBella was asked about this he laughed and said, ” We could make that weight if Martinez cuts his leg off or something. If he loses a limb, maybe we could make that weight. Sergio can’t make 150 and Roach knows that.”
DiBella would continue on to say, “By the way, I don’t fault Freddie for not taking the fight at 54 because we would murder Pacquiao. Manny Pacquiao is one of the greatest fighters of all time, but he’s not a true 54 pounder. Martinez is a 54 pounder that can fight at middleweight.”
In typical DiBella fashion, he went on further, “Instead of Freddie saying that they would fight Martinez at 150, what he is basically saying is Martinez needs to cut off an arm then fight us.” Lou went on to say, ” Pacquiao isn’t afraid of fighting guys at 54 that he knows he can beat, right?, so fight us at 154.”
Martinez is scheduled to fight a very tough Sergiy Dzinziruk tonight on HBO. It’s a slightly risky fight as Martinez is knocking on the door of some huge payday fights. Losing to Dzinziruk would certainly throw a wrench into those plans.
Pacquiao is currently in the Philippines training for his May fight Vs. Shane Mosley.
Mississippians that this writer has spoken with all favor Manny over Mosley rather easily. I spoke with Daniel Richter, a Mosely fan at heart, but favoring Pacquiao. Richter runs a local sports cafe in Jackson, MS. Richter doesn’t give Mosley much chance in May, ” I hate to say it, but my main man Mosley is going to take a whooping in May. Pacquiao is too much, too fast, too many punches.”
I also spoke to Ken Carlson of Canton, MS. Ken talked about tonight’s HBO card and predicts a Martinez victory, but it wont be easy, “Martinez will win but he will do it ugly. Dzinziruk is no joke, he’s got a good jab and he’s strong. He’s also virtually unheard of over here in the USA.”
Martinez Vs. Pacquiao will probably not happen, yet again, in boxing anything can happen.
