During an interview intended to hype up next Saturday?s pay per view fight between Miguel Cotto and Ricardo Mayorga, promoter Bob Arum gave boxing fans across the globe his thoughts on Mexican hopeful Saul ?Canelo? Alvarez.
While appearing on The Boxing Truth Radio, Arum was questioned by co-host John Chavez regarding Alavarez?s Saturday night victory over Matthew Hatton.
Arum made it very clear he was not impressed by Alvarez?s competition or abilities.
?Matthew Hatton is a nice young man,? said Arum, ?but he is nothing more than a C fighter. It looks to me, like he [Alvarez} is fairly slow footed and does not have particularly fast hand speed.?
The legendary boxing promoter also questioned, like many others, the legitimacy of Alvarez?s newly gained World Boxing Council junior middleweight title and believes it will hinder ?Canelo?.
?The worst thing to happen to Alvarez was to fight for this Micky Mouse world title,? said Arum, ?because he truly is not at a level yet that he can fight top fighters in championship fights.?
Like any good promoter, Arum hedges his comments, stating that Alvarez – only 20 years of age – could become a better fighter down the line.
?Now, he very may well develop into that type of fighter. Right now the jury is out.?
