After a one-sided drubbing of Matthew Hatton on HBO, Saul Alvarez has captured the imagination of many boxing fans. And with Hatton being considered a soft touch for the newly crowned World Boxing Council junior middleweight champion, Golden Boy Promotions will be looking for a suitable opponent to test their rising star.
If I were Lou DiBella, head honcho at New York based boxing promotional firm DiBella Entertainment, come Monday morning, I would be calling Golden Boy main man Richard Schaefer peddling a fighting between Alvarez and Kermit Cintron.
Cintron, an enigmatic power punching veteran, has not seen action since a controversial bout against Paul Williams – where Kermit could not continue after seemingly taking a dive off the ring apron onto the cement floor at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California.
?The Killer? could provide a legitimate, but win-able litmus test for the young Mexican and at the same time provide Golden Boy with a fight HBO would be willing to purchase.
Alvarez vs. Cintron, two power-punching junior middleweights, who could reignite the Mexican – Puerto Rican boxing rivalry in a potential fight of the year affair.
Of course, those in the know will argue Golden Boy would be reluctant to push Alvarez into a dangerous fight, but it will have to happen if Alvarez is to stay on HBO.
Cintron is dangerous, due to his heavy handed offense, but possesses limited movement and would be in front of Alvarez all night – providing the young Mexican plenty of opportunities to land his trademark combination power-punches.
So go ahead Lou, dial-up your promotional pals at 626 Wilshire Boulevard, and fight for a bout that will tell us more about Alvarez?s legitimacy as a bona fide boxing star.
