In the wake Manny Pacquiao’s knockout victory over Erik Morales, Freddy Roach-trained Filipino fighters Czar Amonsot and Zcy Gorres both won unanimous decision victories over their Mexican opponents this Friday night (February 3, 2006) at Guilty Fight Night at the Orleans in Las Vegas, Nevada.
In the Semi-main event, Super Featherweight Czar Amonsot improved his record to 14-1-1 (10 KO’s) with an unanimous decision victory (78-73, 77-74, 77-74) over Christian Favela. Favela’s record drops to 11-10-4 (8 KO’s). In Round 2, Favela was cut on top of the head. The beginning of Round 5 saw Amonsot land a stinging left that punished the cut on top of Favela’s head. By Round 6, both men were covered in Favela’s blood. Although Amonsot pressed the action for most of the fight, the game Favela landed his fair share of blows. But in the end, the quick and powerful combinations of Amonsot won him the decision.
The Super Welterweight bout between Joaquin Zamora of Santa Fe, New Mexico and Abdias Castillo of Austin, Texas saw the New Mexican winning a unanimous decision 60-54 on all three judges’ scorecards. Zamora’s record improves to 9-2-1 (7 KO’s) while Castillo’s record falls to 9-14-1 (7 KO’s). In Round 2, Castillo was cut over the right eye. Zamora targeted his left jabs and straight rights to the head of Castillo working the cut. The fight was closer than the scorecards let on with the game Castillo landing power shots throughout the bout. But, the footwork of Zamora gave him the decided advantage leading to the lopsided victory.
In the evening’s Middleweight bout, Darnell Boone of Youngstown, Ohio improved his record to 9-3-1 (4 KO’s) with an unanimous decision victory (60-54, 59-55, 58-56) over James Countryman of Detroit, Michigan, who suffered his first pro defeat dropping to 8-1 (6 KO’s). At the end of Round 5, Countryman’s corner yelled: hands up! as they began to see their fighter’s gloves drop. Battling fatigue, Countryman nevertheless engaged Boone in a crowd-pleasing exchange to end the round. Round 6 ended much like the previous round with another brutal exchange in which Boone got the better of Countryman and ultimately won the nod from the judges.
