Of course this is a fight that may or may not ever happen, but I always like to get different perspectives just in case it ever does. I recently spoke with Showtime Boxing Analyst Al Bernstein, a true legend in boxing. We spoke in depth about Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr.
What if? What if this fight ever were to happen? Who would win and why? This is what I asked Al Bernstein.
Al pulled no punches with his answer. According to him, its all about the math. Math? Yes, math. It’s a matter of who throws the most punches. Mayweather may throw 500 punches in a 12 round fight, but on the other hand, Pacquiao may throw 1,100? It’s basic math according to Bernstein. “What’s Mayweather going to do with the extra 600 punches that Pacquiao will be throwing at him?” asked Bernstein. That’s a good question.
Bernstein asked me another great question. He said, ” Brad, how many fighters change their technique in their 30’s?” Bernstein then added, “Another reason I don’t think Manny is on steroids is because it’s not like Manny got stronger. He didn’t get stronger as he got older, he is beating bigger guys because he and Roach changed his technique in the ring. Steroids have nothing to do with technique.” Bernstein added, “Back when Manny was fighting Morales, he would stand in front of him, come right at him, throw his punches, and exchange with him. Roach knew that Manny couldn’t do that with welterweights, so he changed up Manny’s technique. They made brilliant adjustments, and this is why Manny Pacquiao is beating the bigger guys, not because of steroids.”
My fellow Mississippians are not happy with Floyd Mayweather Jr for the most part. Sure Floyd has fans here, but he lost some of them with his racial remarks against Filipinos, and Manny. Those in Mississippi that I have spoken with about Floyd fighting Manny all want it to happen. The opinions are split along loyalty lines on who will win. Most Mayweather fans think Floyd will win, and most Pacquiao fans think Manny will win.
I still hold onto some slim hope that maybe one day, just maybe we can settle it once and for all.
