Moments ago I spoke with Jose Benavidez Sr., father of the standout junior welterweight prospect of the same name, and was told that there is a change of plans in his son’s career. Benavidez Jr. is on course for an undercard appearance on the May 7th Manny Pacquiao-Shane Mosley bout at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada, but it is his preceding bout that still is a bit up in the air.
Jr. was rumored to be making an appearance on the March 12th Miguel Cotto-Ricardo Mayorga undercard but it looks as though plans have changed, with the 18-year old now said to be heading to Mexico to be a part of Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.’s next ring conquest, according to Jose Sr.
“We definitely are going to be fighting on the Pacquiao undercard,” said Benavidez Sr. “And we were supposed to be fighting on the Cotto-Mayorga undercard in Las Vegas but now we are going to be on the Chavez Jr. card. It’s taking place in Mexico.”
Benavidez Jr. is coming off of a harder than expected six round decision over Fernando Rodriguez this past January at the Texas Station Hotel and Casino. The proud father attributed his son’s less than stellar outing to simply losing focus while in training camp, saying that his boy is still learning the ropes at eighteen years of age.
Benavidez is regarded as one of the hottest prospects in the sport and his coming months should be pretty memorable regardless of what shows he is on.
