FORMER world featherweight king Marco Antonio Barrera is so highly revered in Mexico he seems to be approaching sainthood.
But that was before Barrera was pulverized into smithereens by Filipino Manny Pacquiao last November in San Antonio, Texas.
And because of the terrible beating Barrera got from Pacquiao, Mexicans want no less than revenge not only for the Mexican icon but for their wounded pride.
Several Hispanic papers yesterday ran stories of a supposedly strong desire of Mexicans to avenge the humiliating loss of Barrera to Pacquiao, which they termed as “insulting.”
Mexican boxers are known for their time-honored tradition of out-willing opponents in grueling bouts.
Since Barrera has opted to fight a tune-up match this March, Mexicans are drooling at the chances of up-and-coming hotshot Oscar “Chololo” Larios as possible challenger for Pacquiao?s unofficial “People?s Featherweight” title.
