Thirty four candles on the cake Thursday for Floyd Joy Mayweather Jr.
Won’t you join me, especially you rank and file PWA (Pacquiao Worldwide Army) soldiers, join me in singing a hearty “Feliz Cumpleanos” to “Money” today?
I knew you would, now don’t alter the lyrics, wise guys.
I wonder if Mayweather and his ladylove, Ms. Jackson, will go to a Mexican restaurant in Las Vegas to mark his natal day. I hope they enjoy a sweet desert because, as you all know by now, I’m Mayweather’s Biggest Flan.
This is just a hunch, a suspicion, but I get the feeling that Mayweather, out of the ring since last May 1, is getting ready to announce his return to the work he peforms better than anyone not named Emmanuel Dapidran Pacquiao.
Let me explain why as it relates to a confluence of events and circumstances. Let me explain why it behooves Mayweather and others with hands in his pocket to go on the offensive.
1. As I’ve detailed numerous times, Mayweather is not jail bound on the “Baby Mama Drama” criminal case (he returns to court March 10). Nothing in his no jail plea, which is either forthcoming or has already been offered to his lawyers Karen Winckler and Richard Wright, would deter him from resuming his unbeaten ring career. In fact, getting busy with boxing hopefully lends itself to Mayweather not getting mixed up in bad conduct, be it as to Jose Harris or rent a cops.
2. A probable $40 to $50 purse jackpot to fight Megamanny is sitting there on a silver platter, just waiting for Mayweather’s acquiescence. Sure, at this point, Bob Arum and Pacquiao could demand a purse edge but I think they’ll jump at a 50-50 divide on all income. This is one of those lucrative bouts which brings to mind the old Wall Street saying that “bulls make money, bears make money, only pigs don’t make money.” You’ll hear no oinking now from Uncle Bob or Cousin Manny.
3. HBO versus Showtime/CBS. There are whiffs of desperation emanating from the Sixth Avenue offices of HBO Sports, where nothing is scheduled for Mayweather and Pacman has defected, in what Ross Greenburg and pals hope is a one off, to the Other Guys. Arum and Mayweather guru Al Haymon, whose stuck his head into the Showtime tent with lesser talents and still enjoys an HBO Favorite So9n status, might be able to get a rare bidding war going with the HBO suits on one side and Les Moonves/Matt Blank/Ken Hershman on the other. Is Pacquio’s move to Showtime the signal of a Showtime ring resurgence or just a passing fancy? We’ll soon find out.
4. Another lame-o excuse for Mayweather not fighting Pacman has fallen by the wayside as Uncle Roger, his trainer, got his own no jail plea in his criminal case. Roger will get hit with a civil suit from female boxer Melissa St. Vil, which might put a dent in his Big Fight fee, but so what? It’s just a cost of doing business in Mayweather Land. Look, not to say that Roger does not understand the legal process, but when someone asked him what “an appeal” is, he said, “That’s the skin covering the banana, right?” I’m still laughing about Rajah saying she attacked him in his “own condiment.” Cut the mustard, Black Mamba although there is nothing comical about abusing women.
5. Mayweather-Pacquiao’s temperature has never been, never will be hotter than now. Mayweather may insist on a “tune up” bout but he’s entitled to make that mistake. If he remains shy, Arum will let Pacman play with smallish Juan Manuel Marquez in November. That’s a bout which will do well based on their mutual history. Mayweather has no such attractive foe that I can see. Recently, I’ve been in Washington and San Francisco and I noticed that Floyd-Manny is no longer a racially divided fight in the sense that Manny has plenty of African American fans and Mayweather has his share of fans who are white, Hispanic and even two or three crabby Pinoys who may have been 86’d from the PWA. Across racial and ethnic lines, the fans want Floyd and Manny to determine supremacy in the ring. Letting it go in 2012 is probably not disastrous but the stove has never been hotter and it would be absurd to let it get overcooked.
I repeat and renew my now annual promise. We’ll see Mayweather-Pacquiao before the year is out.
This is, I know, my evergreen prediction.
Som year, it will come to fruition, maybe when the Chicago Cubs win the World Series.
