Moments ago at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, Nevada, welterweight contender Mark Jason Melligen pulled out a hard-fought ten round decision over Sonora, Mexico’s Garbiel Martinez. Melligen wasn’t able to deliver a highlight-reel type of knockout but he did find a way to control nearly every round against his stubborn opponent.
Fighting from a southpaw stance, Melligen seemed to start the fight strong and finish strong as well, closing the final rounds with a definite sense of urgency. Melligen got into a ryhthm with his left hand but wasn’t able to finish off Martinez, who seemed to come equipped with a rock chin.
Scores of 99-91 twice and 98-92 were read in favor of the Bacolod City native, who sees his record rise to 21-2 with 14 early outs. In the dressing room after the fight trianer Tony Martin noted that he would be eyeing a May 6th return to Vegas for his charge, hopefully against Alfonso Gomez.
Melligen trained for the contest out of Floyd Mayweather’s personal gym in Las Vegas.
