Three time Mexican World Champion Fernando ‘Ko-chulito’ Montiel (44-2-2-34 nocauts) will be facing one of the toughest challenges of his boxing career this Saturday night when he steps in the ring with ?The Filipino Flash? Nonito Donaire (25-0-1, 17 nocauts) in a fight to be televised live from HBO.
Montiel, who has had an illustrious career in which he has attained world titles in three weight divisions and has faced such names as Mark Too Sharp Johnson, Martin Castillo, Jhonny Gonzales, and Hozumi Hasewaga, realizes the great test he has ahead of him but counts on his experience to give him the edge on fight night.
?Like you guys (the press) have said of him, he is a very good fighter,? Fernando Montiel would say of his opponent Nonito Donaire. ?He is very quick, flamboyant and intelligent. It?s great that this fight was made so we can see who is better between us two. I think my advantage will be my experience in world title fights and the fact that I have faced other fighters like Nonito Donaire in the past. I also believe that he is lacking experience in fighting fighters of this category.
Despite this lack of experience and the fact that Montiel will be the biggest fight of his career, Nonito has been quoted by numerous sources remarking on future fights against the likes of WBO junior featherweight champion Wilfredo Vazquez jr., featherweight champion Juan Manuel Lopez and of future plans to some day fight as high as 130 and perhaps even beyond. When asked to comment on this, Montiel expressed his belief that Nonito has been underestimating him and in part playing mind games with his comments.
?Listen, the truth is he has underestimated me a bit. Actually he has even under valued what I have accomplished, with some of the things he has said. I do realize this is part of the psychological war though, so it really doesn?t bother me. I?m just focused on my job. I have my own goals right now, but the only thing I am focused at this moment is on beating Nonito this Saturday.
As for a fight prediction, Montiel is ready to go twelve but is certain this fight will not make it into the championship rounds.
