Unbeaten Rodel “Kid Rapido” Mayol has earned the right to a mandatory fight for the World Boxing Council (WBC) minimum weight title after scoring an impressive knockout win in an eliminator bout over the weekend.
Mayol floored Lorenzo Trejo in the opening bell and eventually put away the Mexican in the fourth round with a vicious uppercut during the WBC Night of Champions card Saturday (Sunday in Manila) at the Plaza de Toros in Canc?n, Mexico.
Trejo failed to beat the count and was declared out by the referee, ending his eight-fight winning streak since losing on the scorecards to WBO minimum weight king Ivan Calderon of Puerto Rico in September 2003.
It was Mayol’s 17th knockout victory in 22 starts in more than five years in the paid ranks since July 2000.
With the victory, the former five-time national amateur champion has gained the mandatory shot against WBC minimum weight champion Eagle Kyowa, a Japan-based Thai.
The 24-year-old native of Mandaue City, Cebu, also became the third Filipino to be assured of a WBC world title fight this year after his fellow top ranked contenders, junior flyweight Juanito Rubillar and super featherweight superstar Manny Pacquiao.
Trejo, ranked No. 2 by the WBC and the current North American Boxing Federation 105-pound champ, saw his record drop to 24-13, with 11 KOs. Rey Danseco
